Sadly, exotic birds (mostly parrots, never heard of hummingbirds!) are smuggled into the U.S. all the time in a similar manner -- bound and tucked into wheel wells of cars, etc. Not surprisingly, many of them die in transit. It's good reminder to be sure and work with a reputable breeder, and stick with common species (parakeets, cockatiels, finches, etc.) if you are interested in getting a pet bird! Those poor little guys.
